CISH WSC Hefei Round
Our CISH World Scholar’s Cup (WSC) Senior and Junior teams have just returned from competing at the Hefei Regional Round at Hefei Ansheng School. All three of our teams performed excellently and have advanced to the Global Round. Overall, our teams won 3 trophies, 61 gold medals, and 22 silver medals over the weekend.
This is the first year that our Grade 5 students participated in the WSC. Impressively, the Grade 5 team of Yujun Kim, Kaiwen Yang, and Sejin Won came in first place in the Junior Division Scholar’s Bowl Event.
Our Grade 11 team of Xinyue (Renee) Yu, Fangyu (Cindy Liu), and Eunjoo (Emily) Lee received a trophy and gold medal for coming first place overall in the Senior Division, as well as a trophy and gold medal for first place in the Collaborative Writing Competition.
Combined with our teams who participated in the December regional rounds (online), CISH now has 7 teams qualified and prepared to go to the Global Rounds this August and September in Xiamen, China and Bangkok, Thailand:

PYP VISUAL ARTS (Zeynep Kavas)
Grade 1 students continued to observe various images of cities from past and present, as well as depictions of future city structures in space. With the intention of creating a setting for storytelling.
Grade 2 students continued to reflect on seasonal changes we can see through colour, line, shape and texture. Students completed forming small clay flowers for their coil vases and spent some time practising observational drawing outside.
Grade 3 students continue to respond to The Lost Thing story by Shaun Tan through modelling and construction. They focussed on forming three-dimensional organic shapes and used other recycled materials to create ‘Lost Thing Creatures’.
Grade 4s have almost completed their stop motion animation, as they have been working within the post-production phase. They engaged with adding final details such as a title, ending and recording audio.
Grade 5 students completed their Pop Art inspired self portraits and prepared for framing. We continued to observe various portrait styles with a focus on Italian painter Amadeo Modigliani. Students identified key features of Modigliani’s portraits.

MYP VISUAL ARTS (Roxane Joubert)
Our Grade 6 students are making good progress this final quarter of the year. As they continue to refine their artworks, Grade 6 used their developing knowledge of composition, colour theory and the Elements of art to produce some visually striking works of art.
Grade 7 fully immersed themselves in the making of their Op Art artworks. Some students harnessed the power of colour to create visually dynamic optical illusions whilst other preferred the simplistic effects created by both geometric and organic lines.
Grade 8 began working on the finer details of their summative assessment. This week we printed our series of street art stickers which we will use to embellish our large-scale artwork.
Grade 9 now actively photographing and collating their still images into a moving stop motion animation, we can now confidently proceed to the editing phase of this unit. We will use video editing programs and APPs to adjust, filter and enhance the animation.
MYP DP VISUAL ARTS (Lucian Stefanescu)
Giorgio de Chirico, the founder of the Metaphysical painting movement, was one of the most influential artists of all times. Never achieving the fame of a Leonardo da Vinci, Pablo Picasso or Salvador Dali, he nevertheless had an immense influence on the later and the art movement he brought to fame, Surrealism. Although distinctive in style, both movements share a dreamlike and often vaguely threatening, mysterious quality of a “painting that which cannot be seen” as coined by Roderick Conway Morris. During this unit students will solicit and expand their ability to represent their dreams and conceptual thought through visual analogies and metaphors.
This week Grade 10 students finalized their surrealist paintings.

Diploma Programme 1 student continued working on a series of paintings using ideas based on her Comparative Study research to be exhibited on the May 25th Annual CISH Visual Arts Exhibition.
New Brunswick 120 student wrote her final exams during this week.

Prek-Let’s play along to the song “Play and Stop.” The variations within this song recording interest the students and will encourage them to be good listeners and help develop their sense of musical "Timing."
K1-The Poem “There"s Was a little turtle.” In this activity, we added small movements to match the words “Swam, Climbed, Snapped, Caught.” You can practice this with your child at home.
K2-This week"s music exploration: We bring back one of the classic songs, “Old McDonald.” this is very familiar to the students, and everyone can sing along.
K3-Singing and Movement activity: Peanut Butter and Jelly! With this song students sing and speak expressively as they learn the moves while demonstrating their understanding of singing and speaking voices.

MYP DRAMA (Jonny Turvey)
This week our Grade 8 Drama students finished performing some short scripts they had been working on. The class had been exploring different techniques for acting and stage presence in previous weeks, and this week was the culmination of their efforts.
This week our Grade 9 Drama students finished performing their own scripted comedy plays this week. They had been working on developing their scripts for a few weeks, and this week was the final performance.
This week our Grade 10 Drama students are gearing up for their performance at the Spring Concert. They have been rehearsing for this short play for a few weeks now, and this week was no exception.
In addition to rehearsing, students have been receiving feedback from their teacher and peers to help them improve their performance. The class is excited to perform at the Spring Concert and puttheir skills to the test.

G1 Beginner EAL (Whitney Hartford)
This week in EAL, we reviewed the sounds oo, ew, and ue with words like glue, moon and chew. We practiced the sight words; pink, red, green, blue, yellow and orange.We practiced writing simple sentences and identifying adjectives.
G1 Intermediate EAL (Hercus Theron)
The Grade 1 students finished their MAP testing this week. They now have one more week before they write their WIDA tests. We also learned about the long vowel ‘I’ this week. We continued to practice our reading and listening skills.
G2 Beginner EAL (Whitney Hartford)
This week in EAL, students took a MAP test, we practiced ‘tch’ and ‘nch’ with words like ‘stretch’ and ‘lunch’, and we read the story “Fun at Branch Ranch”. Students practiced spelling their words and identifying them with bingo.
G2 Intermediate EAL (Hercus Theron)
The Grade 2 students concluded their MAP testing this week. They now have one week to prepare for their upcoming WIDA tests. This week, we learned about the long vowel “I” in our phonics class.

This week in EAL, students took a MAP test, we read “Let’s Bee Friends”, and we worked on the student’s plant inquiry project. Students read “Let’s Bee Friends” and answered comprehension questions.
G3 Intermediate EAL (Hercus Theron)
The Grade 3 class had their final MAP test on Wednesday. They also had their field trip this Friday. We also accomplished a lot of learning in our classes as well. This week, students reviewed compound words.
G3 Intermediate EAL (Chris Marionni)
In Mr. Marionni’s G3 Intermediate EAL, students read the short story “The Washing Machine Box”, discussed the story in detail, answered story questions (both verbally and in writing), and focused on story vocabulary using visuals.
G4 Intermediate EAL (Hercus Theron)
This week, the Grade 4MAP testing is over, we are focusing on the upcoming WIDA tests. We have one more week to get ready and will mainly be working on our writing skills. We also spent some time retelling stories to practice our speaking.

G4 & G5 Beginner EAL (Whitney Hartford)
This week in EAL, students took a MAP test, we studied vocabulary words about opposite adjectives. Students practiced matching the words with the pictures. Students wrote opposite adjectives on cutouts and practiced matching the opposite adjective pairs.
G5 Intermediate EAL (Chris Marionni)
In Mr. Marionni’s G5 Intermediate EAL, students read the short story “The Most Wonderful Answer of All”, discussed the story in detail, answered story questions (both verbally and in writing), and focused on story vocabulary using visuals.
G6 EAL (Stanley Kirilenko)
This week, grade 6 began with weekend activity discussions and sharing. The students were tasked to tailor their stories with an emphasis on descriptive language and to keep their stories grounded in facts. Later the group had their catch-up MAP math testing session.
G7 EAL (Matthew Mackey)
This week in EAL, We studied reading comprehension to prepare for the upcoming WIDA test and the students were encouraged to use context clues when coming across words they do not know to help with their understanding of the whole sentence. In I&S, they are finishing their pamphlets about their researched cities.
G8 EAL (Richard McNamara)
During the previous class, the students focused on completing their I&S OPVL report and utilized impartial and unbiased sources to support their inquiries about sustainable practices. The scientific investigation covered various elements. To enhance student comprehension of complex material, I utilized visual aids such as charts and diagrams and provided plain language explanations and additional examples.
G9 EAL (Ayana Najuma)
Grade 9 engaged in activities to better understand and practice the skill of summarizing. To practice the skill independently, students choose their own English movie clip and write a ten-word summary that they then presented to the class. Last, students were given some EAL afternoon time to work with their groups to finish their science showcase projects.
G10 EAL (Steven Schwab)
This week, EAL grade 10 students hada productive and busy week. They used ChatGPT to help them formulate more effective research questions, which allowed them to gather more relevant and useful information.The students made detailed notes from their sources and used them to prepare an essay outline, which they then finalized.They focused on finding clear and useful resources to support their arguments.
Design Tech Highlights

Design Class
Grade six students have continued to make impressive progress in Criteria D this week. They have taken their previous work and transformed it into a comprehensive and detailed logical plan, which they will follow to create their final designs.
The Grade 7 class has made remarkable progress in their Design class this week, as they continue to dive into Criteria D of the Design Cycle. The students have taken their work from Criteria A and B and used this foundational knowledge to develop a detailed logical plan for their final design.
Eighth-grade students have made excellent progress in their Design class this week. They have successfully completed the first half of the Design cycle by personalizing their designs, and now it"s time for them to move into the creative process of bringing their ideas to life.
The next step for the personal project (PP) is the action plan. Students created an action plan for achieving their chosen product.
Design Class
This week, grade 9.2 students have been working hard to conduct thorough research on their chosen topics, gathering and analyzing data from various sources. The class has honed their research skills, including identifying reliable sources, evaluating the credibility and validity of information, and synthesizing information gathered from multiple sources.
An important part of developing what your personal statement will look like is the success criteria. The success criteria are the limits that students put on their projects.
This week in grade 11, students continued studying characteristics and method application of collections in solving programming problems. HL students read and studied dynamic data structures, specifically link-lists.
The grade 12 NB students wrote their computer science exam this week. They had been working hard on review over the last couple weeks. We wish them well on their final assessment and hope that they had a good examination.
